Save the date: May 13/14 is Phinney & Greenwood’s 16th Annual BIG art walk festival that will feature over 150 artists! Tasty is celebrating with an exhibition called TAKE FLIGHT, featuring encaustics by Joel Scholten. Here’s a teaser for you…

A statement from the featured artist, Joel Scholten:
“Painting is my typewriter, and as I click away it unveils a novel, an exaggerated tale of my life. Painting is an opportunity to communicate words that don’t find themselves on paper or slipping off my tongue. As I layer the encaustic wax, I wonder how the viewer will read each texture, material, and color. My desire is to create work that requires the viewer to stop and consider the true meaning within each subject.

My current obsession has been depicting birds as they seemingly mimic human behaviors. As a child, my family was always finding new ways to attract songbirds to the house, and thus they became an icon of my youth. This icon is the ideal subject to relay deeply personal memories, thoughts and difficult lessons-learned with innocence and whimsy. Visually, I find inspiration in Victorian prints, and the beautifully uneven rhythm of letters and numbers as they create paragraphs. I find satisfaction when I can sink those inspirations deep into the waxy layers of a painting.

I believe that artistic expression all comes down to the need to communicate. Every human being has that one thing in his or her life that is too hard to express verbally. For me, art is coping, internalizing and expressing those things; it’s therapy.”
